Case Study: Beauty and Function Meet Cost Effectiveness with GRR x400 and the Lindner Group

The Lindner Group, a family business based in Bavaria, Germany, is one of Europe’s leading specialists in the field of interior design, façade and insulation technology.  The company has approximately 6,000 employees, and over the years there have been several subjects of interest related to 3D printing and frequently prototypes are made.  For example, prototypes of extruded profiles for cable bushings.  This used to be accomplished in the past by actually cutting the material.  “These resulted in costs of about $900 to $1100 for a functional prototype,” said Benjamin Kapfiner an employee in the Lindner Group CAD department.  They wanted to introduce 3D printing to be faster and cheaper.  After an extensive market research investigation, it was decided that the Lindner Group would purchase the x400 3D printer from German RepRap. “We did not know how our new service would strike the market, so we spent our capital wisely,” says Hermann Straubinger, another employee in the CAD department of Lindner Group. “In addition to the price, what convinced us about German RepRap was the expertise and support of the staff there.”  There are not many models in existence at Lindner that Benjamin and Hermann have not printed.

With most of our products, the client can imagine what the product will look like from viewing the CAD drawings, but they can’t touch it in real life.  Even products still in the design phase, like door seals, can be designed and engineered to be ready to use on the 3D printer with relative ease and limited time and cost.  We recently completed a model of roof construction in 1:25 scale and were thrilled with the outcome.


“We never have poor results. You will often see the machines running over 24 hours and successfully produce a printed model – with no problems. The dimensional accuracy is very good. The 0.25 mm thickness is 99% accurate,” says Hermann Straubinger, “Our services are well received by departments around the globe, and we are seeing an upward trend. Meanwhile we are taking requests for small production series of up to 1,000 pieces.
